The Oppenheimer Chair in Public International Law, in collaboration with the McGill Center for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism is pleased to welcome Dr. Farida Shaheed, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights, at the Faculty of Law. Dr. Shaheed will reflect on her six years as Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights, her report to the United Nations council, and her vision for the future of cultural rights, policies, protections, and projects.
The speaker
Dr. Farida Shaheed is a Pakistani sociologist and feminist human rights activists. She is the Independent Expert in the field of cultural rights. She took up her functions as Special Rapporteur in 2009. Recipient of several national and international human rights awards, Farida Shaheed has worked for more than 25 years promoting and protecting cultural rights of marginalized sectors, including women, peasants, and religious and ethnic minorities.
