Call for proposals
The Critical Legal Research Laboratory (CLRL) is pleased to invite you to submit a proposal for its upcoming annual conference, Down to Earth: Critical Legal Approaches and the Environment, which will be held on June 13th and 14th. The event will gather speakers from diverse backgrounds, from international experts, academics as well as students, to a variety of community stakeholders, from legal and environmental settings. Considering the conference will be bilingual, it is possible to submit a proposal either in French or in English.
This event is an opportunity to reflect upon two themes that are rarely reunited in such settings: critical legal approaches as they relate to the environment. Even though the symposium is internationally oriented, innovative and critical approaches to international law and national law are welcome. Participants will be invited to reflect upon critical theoretical aspects as they apply to environmental law. Issues of interest include the relevancy of a category such as “the environment” to perform critical analyses, the inherent contradictions within environmental law, the problematic conception of “nature” within law, and the contribution of theoretical approaches focused on human rights, third-world approaches, or environmental justice approaches to questions of environmental protection. This symposium aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice in order to explore alternative and concrete approaches to the current conception of nature within law, for example within aboriginal communities. Even if this event’s aim is to create a critical theoretical discussion, participants are asked to present their thoughts in an accessible manner, in order to foster a discussion climate truly open to all.
Publication of conference proceedings is anticipated. If your participation requires a travel grant, please indicate this clearly in your email. The deadline for proposal submissions of a maximum of 350 words, accompanied by a short biography, is January 4th 2016, to be sent to the following email address: lrcd@usherbrooke.ca. Please send your proposal with the subject line “Proposal – LRCD Annual Conference 2016”.
Looking forward to reading your innovative proposals,
The CLRL team
